Exelon Visitor Center Interactives

Overview

Exelon’s subsidiary Constellation Energy opened a new energy trading facility and visitor center in Baltimore, Maryland. Exelon wanted visitors to be able to tour this facility, but the workings of energy trading floor itself, and the broad range of Constellation’s offerings, were hard for visitors to comprehend.

Stimulant developed two interactive applications to help visitors understand the depth and sophistication of this trading operation. Both experiences leverage Stimulant’s proprietary Gigatouch platform for creating explorable 360 panoramas. Gigatouch provides meaningful context to unfamiliar views and vistas through interactive discovery and rich media annotation. Originally developed for use in tall-building observation decks, it has since found broad applications in visitor centers, attractions and other large facilities where answering the question “What am I seeing down there?” is critical. Photographic, 3D rendered and illustration-based imagery are all supported. Content for the system is hosted in an Adobe Experience Manager CMS to facilitate updates to content without requiring changes to the deployed software.

The primary visitor center interactive is a site-specific gigapixel panorama of the trading floor itself, on a large permanent touchscreen. We shot and stitched a custom panoramic photo that captured all of the different stations to allow us to highlight the different stations and explain the function and role of each.

The photo is at such high resolution that visitors can pinch-zoom in to see what is displayed on various monitors at the desks of each station. Each station has a rich explanation (including imagery and video media) of the functions of that desk and the role it plays in energy trading.

The other interactive is tablet-based, for use in various conference rooms throughout the building. This interactive feature a custom digital illustration of a hypothetical city to showcase real-world Constellation case studies. Constellation uses this interactive in face-to-face meetings and briefings to discuss their various capabilities and efforts in the local region and beyond. IT has become both an effective tool for tours as well as business development.

These two interactives let docents and customer experience center visitors explore Constellation’s capabilities and impact, driven by visitors’ own interests and curiosity.
